The main objectives of IDR are:
- support and development of demographic research in Greece
- collection, processing and analysis of demographic, population and social data at national and regional levels as well as the development of tools and initiatives in the field of open, web-based data with a view to their widespread use
- -documentation of demographic development and prospects at national and regional levels and the assessment of their impact
- investigation of the two-way links between population and economic, social and territorial development and cohesion, the preparation of relevant applied studies with emphasis on strategic foresight and formulation of policy proposals and adaptation to demographic and population development.
- creation of a Demographic Development and Policy Observatory aimed at monitoring population-demographic development at national and regional levels in Greece and the critique presentation of undertaken measures.
- implementation of sample surveys on opinions, attitudes, views and perception of demography with a focus on population ageing and reproduction.
- provision of training services and production of educational and information material on issues relating to demographic – population development and their impact, raising awareness of civil society and, in particular, of younger generations
- organization of exhibitions, seminars, workshops and conferences aiming, interalia, at educating and informing those responsible for the adoption and implementation of policy measures as well as informing civil society
- consulting on survey methodology and, in particular, on methods, techniques and measures in population analyses
- implementation of studies and surveys in regional development and spatial planning
